Level 5 DHXXX
This course is designed for learners who wish to pursue careers in Hairdressing and Cosmetics. It has both practical and theoretical elements.

Notes: Learners may submit a maximum of two components from Level 4 and a maximum of one component from Level 6. Components from Level 4 will have a value of 0.5 while those from Level 6 will have a value of 1 unless otherwise specified.

Hairdressing Theory and Practice Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • have good personal presentation habits
  • develop safe and hygienic work practices
  • establish and maintain good personal relationships with clients and colleagues
  • become proficient at basic hairdressing skills
  • acquire a basic knowledge of hair style and design
  • understand the organisation and working of hairdressing salons
  • assist the professional stylist

Hairdressing Science Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • have a working knowledge of the human body in relation to hairdressing
  • understand diseases and disorders of the human skin, head and scalp
  • understand the scientific principles associated with various hairdressing processes
  • have a knowledge of hairdressing preparations
  • understand the scientific principles underlying the functioning of the salon
  • be aware of common hazards in the workplace
  • develop safe and hygienic work practices

Communications Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • develop an awareness of the essential role played by communication in human interaction
  • acquire communication skills relevant to vocational and personal development
  • understand the communicative principles and practices involved in gathering and relaying information
  • acquire the skills and confidence to convey and interpret meaning, in writing, orally and visually
  • develop a critical awareness of communications messages and media
  • explore the use of modern communication and information technology, and its application in personal and vocational life

Work Experience Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • develop critical awareness of the changing nature of work
  • set achievable goals for work experience
  • utilise learning opportunities presented in the work environment
  • apply work skills to consolidate learning in the vocational area
  • understand how work is planned and organised at different levels in a specific vocational area
  • appreciate the importance of safety and welfare in the workplace
  • develop capabilities, both personal and vocational, to successfully meet challenges in the workplace
  • review career choices in the light of their own aspirations, experience, abilities and available options
  • explore future employment opportunities (including opportunities for self employment, contract work, work in the social economy, etc)

Reception Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • appreciate the professional skills required by a receptionist to operate in a front line position
  • appreciate the importance of the layout and maintenance of a reception area
  • understand and implement the procedures involved in the operation of an efficient front office area
  • understand the different systems and equipment in operation within a reception area
  • demonstrate a professional attitude to colleagues and clients
  • appreciate the importance of confidentiality in all business communication and transactions

Anatomy and Physiology Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • acquire knowledge of the structure and function of the human body
  • recognise the human body as an entity
  • understand the interrelationship between the systems of the body

Customer Service Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • understand the role of customer service in organisational effectiveness
  • understand the role and responsibilities of a representative of an organisation and work effectively as part of a team
  • acquire a range of verbal and non- verbal skills in order to meet customer needs, handle customer complaints and deliver good customer care
  • become familiar with consumer protection legislation
  • appreciate the rights of all customers regardless of gender, marital status, family status, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, race or culture

Safety and Health at Work Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • understand the concepts of safety and health
  • recognise the factors that influence health, safety and welfare
  • apply the principles and procedures of health and safety to the workplace
  • understand the importance of hazard identification and risk assessment
  • promote safe working practices and procedures
  • be familiar with core legislation in the area of safety, health and welfare
