Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • recognise the capabilities and potential of the individual child across all domains of development
  • carry out observation and evaluation techniques, and understand their implications for practice
  • understand the influence of genetic, social, cultural and environmental factors on the overall development of the child
  • understand the interdependency of all domains of development
  • critically reflect on child development theory and its impact on early childhood education and care practice

Early Childhood Programmes Level 6
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • acquire an understanding of early childhood programmes
  • understand the integrated role of learning, development and curriculum/programmes
  • appreciate the range of features involved in effective early childhood programmes
  • explore the role and responsibilities of the supervisor and the childcare worker in relation to programme practice
  • appreciate the interrelationship between planning, implementation, evaluation and curriculum/programmes

Social and Legal Issues in Childcare Level 6
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • be familiar with international perspectives on early childhood education and care
  • appreciate a range of factors influencing and impacting on early childhood education and care in Ireland
  • develop an awareness of statutory regulations and voluntary guidelines, which relate directly to and impact on early childhood education and care settings
  • understand and interpret social policy as it impacts on children and their families
  • understand the procedures for dealing with suspected or actual abuse and the need for support for children, families and staff
  • understand the principles of equality and its application in an early childhood education and care setting

Supervision in Childcare Level 6
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • acquire the skills, knowledge and competence required to supervise an early childhood education and care setting and
  • support others in their role and performance
  • recognise the benefits of being a reflective practitioner
  • analyse relevant theory and relate it to the practice of supervision
  • be able to lead, motivate and support a team
  • devise strategies for working in partnership with parents/carers and external organisations

Marketing Practice Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • be familiar with the principles and practices of marketing
  • be able to work effectively as a marketing assistant
  • understand the functions of a marketing department
  • understand the role of marketing in everyday life

Spreadsheet Methods Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • understand spreadsheets and their range of application
  • design spreadsheets for a range of tasks
  • create spreadsheets from design specification(s)
  • utilise a wide range of functions, including macros and other functions
  • create a spreadsheet, according to a given brief, under time constraints
  • demonstrate personal initiative and resourcefulness in responding to spreadsheet assignments

Word Processing Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • acquire a thorough working knowledge of a word processing package
  • be familiar with an operating system
  • develop the skills of personal initiative and resourcefulness
  • develop good work practices in relation to the use of the computer, printer and materials
  • acquire the skills necessary to produce attractive documents to mailable standard

Bookkeeping Manual and Computerised Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • acquire an understanding of basic bookkeeping concepts and terminology
  • acquire the knowledge and skills to record transactions in a manual accounts system and draw up a trial balance
  • understand the main components of a computer system, and acquire the skills to carry out various housekeeping tasks
  • appreciate the advantages of computerised accounts, and be aware of the various accounts packages available
  • appreciate the importance of data accuracy and confidentiality in financial transactions
  • appreciate the importance of regular back- up of data in a computerised accounts system

Payroll Manual and Computerised Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to use both manual and computerised payroll systems
  • understand the essential and appropriate terminology associated with personal taxation
  • appreciate the importance of accuracy and security in preparing and maintaining payroll records
  • acquire the knowledge and understanding of how the cumulative, emergency and temporary tax systems operate

Anatomy and Physiology Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • acquire knowledge of the structure and function of the human body
  • recognise the human body as an entity
  • understand the interrelationship between the systems of the body

Customer Service Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • understand the role of customer service in organisational effectiveness
  • understand the role and responsibilities of a representative of an organisation and work effectively as part of a team
  • acquire a range of verbal and non- verbal skills in order to meet customer needs, handle customer complaints and deliver good customer care
  • become familiar with consumer protection legislation
  • appreciate the rights of all customers regardless of gender, marital status, family status, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, race or culture

Working in Childcare Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • be aware of the history and current status of childcare provision in Ireland
  • recognise the importance of certain personal qualities and values for those working with children
  • understand the entitlements and responsibilities of a childcare employee
  • appreciate the need for continuing professional development in childcare, drawing on personal reflection and experience
  • promote equality of opportunity and respect for diversity in the childcare setting
  • appreciate the importance of working effectively with parents and as part of a childcare team

Communications Level 5
Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • develop an awareness of the essential role played by communication in human interaction
  • acquire communication skills relevant to vocational and personal development
  • understand the communicative principles and practices involved in gathering and relaying information
  • acquire the skills and confidence to convey and interpret meaning, in writing, orally and visually
  • develop a critical awareness of communications messages and media
  • explore the use of modern communication and information technology, and its application in personal and vocational life
